How I Create Mixed Media Portraits
Today, I wanted to share one of my favorites way to create mixed media portraits. For some reason, painting the face separately then adding it to my journal is less intimidating. I have more freedom to play around with collage. Sometimes, I’ll start my face in watercolor, and other times I’ll use acrylics.
My Process:
I start with gessoed watercolor paper.
Painting in thin messy layers helps me stay loose and get wrapped up in perfection.
Adding colored pencil and wax pastels help clean up the details.
I play around with random papers and collage around the face.
Once I’m done I glue/seal everything with matte gel medium.
My collage portraits are inspired by fashion design, print, and jewelry. I hope this gives you some ideas for your next mixed media face.
